Correct, this is not a typical cheesesteak. It’s using the absolutely wrong cheese (don’t get me wrong, I love cheddar but it doesn’t belong on a cheesesteak) and bread? French baguette? WHY?!
Also, lettuce, tomato and mayo make it closer to a “cheesesteak hoagie” (a topic I often avoid talking about because it blows non-Philadelphians minds.
And although accepted here in Philly in most places… I hate mushrooms. That’s a personal note though.
So… the only thing that makes this remotely related to an actual cheesesteak is that they’re both using beef?
Before: Lett, toms, and mayo- not typical of PCS
…
After: I can dig it.

Get that tomato out of there. Also, that steak looks completely overdone. Is that mayo? BAH!

Another case of “shouldn’t even be called a cheesesteak.” Steak-Ums, in the eyes of any purist or true Philadelphian automatically invalidates you. However, at least they’re still intended to go into crappy homemade, from-the-freezer cheesesteaks. Instead, you load it up with spices to create some sort of weird, awful, over-seasoned grilled cheese with beef in it.
At least you used an acceptable cheese.
Cheesesteak.

Lettuce, tomato, too many peppers… what the phuck is this?
You describe their cheese sauce as too “mayonnaise-y.” This is all kinds of wrong: it’s either real cheese (American or Provolone) or Cheese Whiz. Not some sort of mayo-based monstrosity.
I love California for many reasons. Their depictions of East Coast food is not one of them. Also, I saw your review of the steak you got here in Philly. 1) Never go to Jim’s on South Street. It’s not worth it for the wait alone. 2) I had no idea they would actually serve you a cheesesteak with lettuce. That. is. awful. Good thing I never go there unless there’s a zero wait, and when I do… I do it right.
PS. Curly fries? Really?
UPDATE: The reason you’re disappointed at the one tiny pepper that it came with, might’ve been because that was just a side condiment, like a pickle spear with a burger.
